I must admit that I was handling the disappointment of the Celtics defeat in the finals pretty well, until I watched Bill Russell hand the "Bill Russell Finals MVP" trophy to ... Kobe Bryant? I'm sure Russell watched Pau Gasol's nearly 20-20 performance (19 points, 18 rebounds) in Game 7 with admiration, and it would have been more fitting to see Gasol win the award.
I still find it somewhat ironic that the award was named after Russell. He is obviously deserving of the honor, but the NBA should have started handing them out in 1959, instead of waiting until 1969 when Russell was past his prime and unable to win one. Of course, Russell is far prouder of his 11 rings.
